It’s about to be the end of an era for The CW as they and Warner Bros. Television have announced today that The Flash will be ending with Season 9. The ninth and final season will consist of 13 episodes.
“Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor, and spectacle,” Executive Producer and Showrunner Eric Wallace has said in a statement. “And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race. So many amazing people have given their talents, time, and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers, and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.“
When all is said and done, The Flash will have been the longest-running “Arrowverse” show in TV history, and the second-longest-running DC Comics-inspired series, with only Smallville having more episodes. It was one of the most successful CW series of the past decade. The Flash Season 9 is scheduled to premiere in 2023; the series stars Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Danielle Nicolet, Brandon McKnight, and Kayla Compton, with Jesse L. Martin expected to make appearances in the final season. While The CW has not yet announced any specific guest stars, it’s probably a safe bet that we will see some returning faces in the final season, as well.
The last year has been a grim one at The CW, especially for fans of DC TV, as Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Naomi all ended this past season. Unless they, too, end up having planned endings, Superman & Lois and DC’s Stargirl might be the only veteran DC shows after the 2022-2023 TV season; they will be joined by Gotham Knights early in 2023.
